Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the count of participants for various social activities at one social center in Australia from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the majority of participants was in film club activity while, the least number of participants was in musical performances in the given time period.

Watching closely to the line graph it is clear that, the number of participants in musical performances was 0 in 2005 and after a gradual increase the number rose to around 15 in 2020. There was just approximately 18 participants in table tannis in 2000 and remain constant till 2010. After that, the number of participants significantly increased to around 50 in 2020. The number of participants in film remain unchanged throughout the years. That was around 60. The only catagory in which the number of participants decreased was in amateur dramatics. It was around 15 in 2000 and dropped to just 2 in 2020. The number of participants in martial arts also remain constant from 2000 to 2020. The number was approximately 35 through the years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall patterns: film club has the highest participation, musical performances start at zero and rise, table tennis grows strongly, and amateur dramatics declines. This gives the response a relevant overview and covers the main activities. However, several details are inaccurate or too broad: film club fluctuates slightly rather than remaining unchanged, and amateur dramatics begins at about 26, not 15, before falling to around 6 rather than 2. Martial arts also varies between roughly 32 and 38, so describing it as constant misses its small fluctuations. The overview’s claim that musical performances had the fewest participants throughout is not accurate by 2020, when amateur dramatics is lower. More precise comparisons and a clearer account of these changes would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is arranged in a generally understandable order: an introduction and overview are followed by descriptions of the individual activities. This makes the main information easy to locate. However, most of the report is presented as one long paragraph, and the repeated openings such as “The number of participants…” make the progression feel list-like. Some linking is also mechanical, as in “After that” and “The only category…”. Grouping the rising activities together and contrasting them with the declining or relatively stable ones would create a clearer progression. Use paragraph breaks for the overview and the detailed comparisons, and vary referencing so that readers can follow which activity each figure describes without repeated full phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a line graph, including “gradual increase,” “significantly increased,” “decreased,” and “dropped.” These choices communicate the broad trends, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some wording is imprecise or repetitive: “count of participants” and “the number of participants” recur, while “remain constant” does not accurately describe the small fluctuations in film club and martial arts. There are also spelling errors in “table tannis” and “catagory,” and “film club activity” is an awkward collocation. Choose more precise trend language, such as “fluctuated slightly” where appropriate, and check spelling and natural combinations of words before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex opening with “while” and time clauses such as “After that…”. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the majority of participants was” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “the number … remain constant” should use the past form “remained.” The sentence beginning “Watching closely to the line graph” is not formed naturally, and commas are misplaced in phrases such as “while, the least…” and “it is clear that, the number…”. Aim for accurate past-tense reporting throughout and use punctuation to separate clauses cleanly. More controlled complex sentences would improve accuracy without sacrificing variety.
