Student answer (Band 5.5)
The graph displays data about the numbers of participants take part in different activities in Australia between 2000 to 2020.
To begin with, There are five main categories, Film club has the highest number of participants, Martial arts was on the second positon with 35 contenders, Amateure dramatics was on third position with 28 members, subsequently table tennis had only 15 and at last but not the least musical performace had no participants.
Within years, trend changes and some categories loose participants and some get popularity with increasing members. The only categorie which face downfall at the end was Amateur dramatics and others gains more participants. For example, Film club maintains its participants, on the other side table tennis perfom extraordarnary with almost 55 members. This shows us that people become more intrested in table tennis and Amateur dramatics losses its fame with the passage of time. At last, Martial arts becomes the leading contender in popularity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the five activities and note several relevant patterns, especially the sharp rise in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, the report only partly summarises the graph: it gives few accurate comparisons across the period and does not clearly present the main overall picture. Some claims are incorrect: film club rises slightly overall rather than simply maintaining its numbers, and martial arts does not become the leading activity; film club remains highest throughout. The opening comparison also mixes figures from different years without saying so. To strengthen the response, give a clear overview of the main trends, then support it with selected start- and end-point figures and accurate comparisons between the activities.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable sequence: an introduction, an initial comparison, and a paragraph describing changes over time. This gives the reader a coherent overall arrangement. Linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “Within years,” and “For example” help signal movement between points, although some are mechanical or do not express the relationship precisely. The first body paragraph lists activities in rank order but does not establish a clear time reference, while the final paragraph combines trends, examples, and a conclusion without a fully controlled progression. Organise the report around an overview followed by grouped trends—for example, the consistently high figures and the contrasting rises and falls—and use clearer references to years and figures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of topic-related vocabulary, including “participants,” “categories,” “trend,” “increasing,” and “popularity,” so the subject is generally understandable. However, word choice and collocation are often imprecise: “35 contenders” is unsuitable for people taking part in activities, and “table tennis perform extraordinarily” does not naturally describe a trend in participant numbers. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “positon,” “Amateure,” “perfom,” and “intrested,” which reduce the accuracy of the report. Prefer neutral, data-focused language and check spelling carefully. For instance, describe numbers as rising, falling, remaining stable, or reaching a figure, rather than saying an activity gains fame.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including the contrast in “some categories loose participants and some get popularity.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence construction and verb forms sometimes make the meaning less clear. Examples include “participants take part” in the opening, “between 2000 to 2020,” and “Film club maintains its participants,” where the grammatical patterns or tense choices are not well controlled. Capitalisation after “To begin with,” is also incorrect. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and sentence patterns such as “the number of participants in X rose from … to …” and “while X declined, Y increased.” Proofread each sentence for subject–verb agreement, tense, and punctuation.
