Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given data compares the number of people who participated in various activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, amateur dramatics showed a steep decline over the years and table tennis contestants remained stable for the fist 10 years and showed a marked increase in the next 10 years. Rest of the activities did not fluctuate a lot.

Film club and martial arts participants showed a similar trend and fluctuated very little over the years. Musical performances were absent in the first 5 years and when it started in 2005 it exhibited a steady increase, starting with 0 participants and ending with approximately 15 participants in the year 2020. Table tennis participants were in between the range of 15 to 20 till 2010 but later years showed progressive increase. Amateur dramatics fluctuated in the first decade and ranged between 20 to 30 participants. The second decade followed a downward trend with approximately 5 participants by the end of 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main patterns accurately: amateur dramatics falls markedly, table tennis rises strongly after 2010, and film club remains at a high level with little change. The overview also distinguishes the broadly stable activities from the more dramatic changes. However, some details are imprecise or inconsistent. You say musical performances were absent for the first five years and “when it started in 2005,” although the chart shows the series beginning in 2010; the figures then rise from about 12 to 18. The claim that film club and martial arts show a similar trend is also too broad, since martial arts fluctuates around the mid-30s while film club stays around 60–66. More precise comparisons and coverage of the key figures would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph describing the individual activities. Information is generally easy to follow, and time markers such as “till 2010,” “later years,” and “by the end of 2020” help establish progression. Some cohesion is less controlled, however. “Rest of the activities” is an unclear reference, and the discussion moves from film club and martial arts to musical performances, table tennis, and amateur dramatics without a particularly deliberate grouping. The overview also repeats points developed immediately afterward. Grouping the stable series together and the contrasting rising and falling series together, with clearer links between them, would make the progression more purposeful.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “steep decline,” “marked increase,” “fluctuated,” and “downward trend,” which helps describe changes rather than simply list figures. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural for this chart: “contestants” is not the best term for people taking part in table tennis, and “were absent” suggests the performances themselves were missing rather than that there were no participants. “Progressive increase” is also less natural than a direct description such as “rose steadily.” There is a spelling error in “fist,” and “in between the range” is an awkward phrase. More precise collocations and accurate spelling would make the vocabulary more flexible and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the contrast in “Film club and martial arts participants showed a similar trend and fluctuated very little” and the time clause “when it started in 2005.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical control is uneven. “Rest of the activities did not fluctuate a lot” is missing a determiner, while “Table tennis participants were in between the range of 15 to 20” has an awkward prepositional construction. The long sentence beginning “Musical performances were absent” also combines several ideas in a way that makes the timeline harder to follow. Check articles and sentence boundaries, and use clearer structures when reporting a series of changes.
