Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response provides a general overview but fails to report specific data points or trends effectively. While you mention the film club and martial arts, you do not include specific figures from the graph to support your claims, which is essential for an Academic Task 1 response. The description of trends is vague; for instance, stating that amateur dramatics saw a 'declining trend' lacks the necessary detail regarding the starting and ending points. To improve, you must select key data points (e.g., the peak or the start/end values) to illustrate the trends. The response lacks a clear summary of the main features, focusing instead on general observations without sufficient analytical depth.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is presented as a single paragraph, which hinders the logical flow of information. An IELTS Task 1 response should be structured with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information logically. While you use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'However', the overall progression is somewhat disjointed. The lack of clear paragraphing makes it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the different activities. To improve, ensure you separate your overview from your detailed analysis and use clear paragraph breaks to distinguish between different categories of activities.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate to convey the basic meaning, but there are several spelling errors ('reepresents', 'uniformaly', 'wether', 'peform', 'wtch', 'succesive') and some awkward phrasing ('the field of amateur dramatics have seen a variation'). The range of vocabulary is limited, and the errors occasionally distract the reader. To reach a higher band, you should focus on accurate spelling and using more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a significant rise'. Avoid informal phrasing like 'folks' and ensure that your word choices are appropriate for an academic context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the clarity of the writing. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'the field of amateur dramatics have seen' (should be 'has seen') and 'participation have shown' (should be 'has shown'). Additionally, there are punctuation errors and missing articles throughout the text. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar limits the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve the quality of your writing.
