Student answer (Band 6.5)

The following line graph illustrates the total count of competitors who took part in various amusement activities in Melbourne, Australia for two decades.

Summarising the given information, it is concluded that the film club was most preferred by participants whereas amateur dramatics had lowest number of people.

Analysing the greatest contributions, it is noticed that over more than 60 people chosen film club in the year 2000 which gradually dropped in half the decade and declined further in next five years. Subsequently, it took a plunge in the next five years and reached at the zenith in 2020. Similarly, table tennis also grew overtime and attracted a massive population from the years 2010 to 2020.

In contrary, amateur dramatics only had about 25 participants which grew little by 2005 but faced ultimate descend in following years falling to the lowest value of below 10 by 2020. Additionally, no participant showed interest in musical performances and even in 2005 a petite count took part. People took interest in music years later but it still had a lower ratio by 2020. In this whole period, martial arts had showed a constant trend.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the graph, but there are significant inaccuracies in the data interpretation. For example, you state the film club reached its 'zenith' in 2020, but the graph shows a decline to a low point by that year. Additionally, the description of the trends is confusing; you mention the film club 'gradually dropped' and then 'took a plunge,' which is contradictory. While you identify the main activities, the lack of precision in reporting the data points and the misinterpretation of the trends prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure you carefully track the lines against the Y-axis and avoid subjective descriptions that do not align with the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or misused. For instance, 'In contrary' is an incorrect collocation; 'On the contrary' or 'In contrast' would be more appropriate. The transition between ideas is occasionally abrupt, and the logical flow is hindered by the factual inaccuracies mentioned in the task achievement section. While the paragraphing is functional, the internal cohesion within paragraphs needs more variety and better control to achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates,' 'competitors,' and 'zenith.' However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'amateur dramatics had lowest number' (missing article), 'grew little,' 'ultimate descend' (should be 'decline'), and 'petite count.' These errors occasionally make the text feel unnatural. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure you are using the correct parts of speech when describing trends and quantities.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the clarity of the writing. Common issues include missing articles (e.g., 'had lowest number'), incorrect verb tenses or forms (e.g., 'had showed' instead of 'showed'), and preposition errors (e.g., 'reached at the zenith'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing past data will help improve your accuracy.
