Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram illustrates the number of people participating for different activities at the social centre of Melbourne, Australia. Overall, it helps understand how people's preferences changed over the years of 2000 to 2020 over a set of activities.

The activities in the graph include film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis and musical performances. Film club is the top played activity steadily growing with a positive trend in participants. Martial arts had its highs and lows reaching its peak in 2010 at around 40 participants. Meanwhile, table tennis began small with only around 15 participants and saw a huge increase in 2010. It overtook martial arts in 2015 ending with over 50 participants. At last, amateur dramatics and musical performances are the least played activities in the years. Although, musical performances started with 0 participants, it had a positive trend throughout the years, ending with 20 participants and overtaking amateur dramatics in 2015.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all key features of the graph, including the overall trends and specific data points for the five activities. You successfully identified the most popular activity and noted the significant changes in table tennis and amateur dramatics. However, the analysis is slightly uneven; for instance, the claim that martial arts has the 'largest positive slope' is factually questionable when compared to the growth of table tennis. Additionally, the overview is somewhat generic. To reach a higher band, ensure that comparisons are more precise and that the overview highlights the most significant trends (e.g., the shift in popularity from traditional activities to others) rather than just stating that preferences changed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile,' 'Although,' and 'Out of all the activities' helps guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt, and some cohesive links feel a bit mechanical. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking phrases to connect sentences more fluidly, ensuring that the progression of ideas feels natural rather than just a list of observations.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'steady growth,' 'positive trend,' and 'negative trend.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'top played activity' (which is slightly unnatural; 'most popular' would be better) and 'largest positive slope' (which is more mathematical than descriptive for an IELTS task). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more varied collocations and precise reporting verbs would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear, and errors in grammar and punctuation do not impede communication. There are a few minor slips, such as 'the years of 2000 to 2020 over a set of activities' (which is slightly awkward) and 'At last, amateur dramatics...' (where 'Finally' would be more appropriate). You have good control over basic structures, but to achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as relative clauses or participle phrases, with greater consistency and fewer minor errors.
