Student answer (Band 7.0)

A comparative line graph from the years 2000 to 2020 shows the difference in engagement in a Melbourne social center activities.

Overall, while some activities gained in popularity others declined or stayed at a stable level with the film club activity being the most famous one during the 20 years.

In fact, from 2000 to 2020 the film club attracted about an average of 65 per cent of the total participants with a slight decrease around 2010 of 60 per cent. It also maintained an overall constant percentage insuring the first place during that span of years. In 2005 with the welcoming of the musical performances as an activity things started to change except for the martial arts activity which, the same as the film club, stayed constant during the 20 years period. As a matter of fact, from that year on, while the musical performances club kept increasing steadily in engagement the amateur dramatics activity decreased to reach about 5 per cent of the number of participants in 2020. As for the table tennis activity even though it stayed stable at 20 per cent from 2005 to 2010 it soared in popularity beginning from that date which brings it to the second position with about 55 per cent in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response covers all key features of the graph, including the trends for the film club, musical performances, martial arts, amateur dramatics, and table tennis. You successfully identified the main trends and made relevant comparisons, such as noting the film club's dominance and the significant rise of table tennis. However, the report could be improved by ensuring the data points are more precise. For example, stating 'about 65 per cent' is acceptable, but the analysis of the 'slight decrease' could be more clearly linked to the specific years provided in the graph. Overall, the summary is accurate and addresses the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, moving from an overview to specific details. You use cohesive devices such as 'In fact', 'As a matter of fact', and 'As for' to transition between ideas. However, the paragraphing is limited; the entire body of the report is contained within one large paragraph. To achieve a higher band, you should split the response into distinct paragraphs—for example, one for the overview and one or two for the detailed analysis of the trends. This would improve the overall flow and readability of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly, using terms like 'engagement', 'steadily', 'soared', and 'constant'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'insuring the first place' (should be 'ensuring') and 'most famous one' (in the context of data, 'most popular' is more appropriate). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate the response. The range is sufficient for the task, but lacks the flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'while some activities gained in popularity others declined'. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the same as the film club, stayed constant during the 20 years period' (missing 'a' or 'the') and 'which brings it to the second position' (tense inconsistency). Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences are slightly long and would benefit from clearer clause separation. The errors present do not impede communication, but more consistent control over complex structures is needed for a higher score.
