Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While you have identified the main trends, the analysis is underdeveloped. For instance, you mention that 'table tennis went up significantly' and 'film club was always highest,' but you do not provide enough detail or comparative analysis to fully satisfy the task requirements. The data points provided are sparse, and the overall summary lacks the depth expected for an Academic Task 1 response. To improve, ensure you include more specific data points and provide a more comprehensive overview of the trends across the entire 20-year period.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions like 'First' and 'On the other hand' are used, but the flow between sentences is occasionally disjointed. The progression of ideas is clear enough to follow, but the lack of length prevents a more sophisticated development of the report. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your sentences connect more naturally to create a cohesive narrative rather than just listing data points.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. You rely on simple verbs like 'went up,' 'grew,' and 'went down.' While these are accurate, they do not demonstrate the range of vocabulary expected at higher bands. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as '16 individual' (should be '16 individuals'). To improve, incorporate more precise reporting verbs and nouns related to data trends, such as 'fluctuated,' 'remained constant,' or 'a marginal increase.' Expanding your range of descriptive language will help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'it stood at 25 participants at the beginning' appearing after a full stop, and the lack of pluralisation in '16 individual.' Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure is somewhat repetitive. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct pluralisation. Additionally, try to combine sentences using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions to demonstrate a better command of complex grammatical structures while maintaining accuracy.
