Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the development of the task. While you have identified some main features, such as the growth of table tennis and the decline of amateur dramatics, the analysis is underdeveloped. You have not provided sufficient detail or comparative data to fully satisfy the requirements of an Academic Task 1 response. To improve, you must ensure you reach the word count by providing a more thorough breakdown of the data points and ensuring all trends are clearly described with accurate supporting figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical (e.g., 'First', 'On the other hand', 'Moreover'). The progression of ideas is logical, but the brevity of the response makes the overall flow feel disjointed. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that sentences within paragraphs are more smoothly connected to create a more cohesive narrative rather than a list of observations.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. You rely on simple verbs like 'went up', 'grew', and 'stayed the same'. While these are accurate, they do not demonstrate the range required for higher bands. There are also some minor issues with word choice, such as '16 individual' (should be '16 individuals'). To improve, incorporate more precise reporting verbs and nouns, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained constant', or 'a significant increase'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, 'The line graphs illustrates' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'it stood at 25' (capitalisation error). Additionally, the phrasing '16 individual' lacks pluralisation. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to lower the score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent use of plural forms when discussing data.
