Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates how many people participated in five different activities at a Melbourne social centre between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, Film Club consistently attracted the highest number of participants over the entire 20-year period, whereas Amateur Dramatics experienced the most significant decline. Conversely, Table Tennis and Musical Performances showed notable upward trends.

In 2000, Film Club led the group with approximately 64 participants and remained relatively stable, slightly increasing to about 66 by 2020. Martial Arts maintained a fairly steady attendance, hovering between 30 and 38 participants throughout the two decades.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is significantly under-length at 93 words, failing to meet the 150-word minimum requirement. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. While you have identified the main features and provided an overview, the report is incomplete. You have only described two of the five activities (Film Club and Martial Arts), completely omitting the data for Table Tennis, Musical Performances, and Amateur Dramatics. To achieve a higher band, you must ensure all data categories are covered and the minimum word count is met to allow for a full development of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction and an overview. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'whereas', and 'conversely' effectively to link ideas. However, because the response is so brief and incomplete, the overall progression is stunted. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the lack of detail regarding the remaining activities prevents a more sophisticated flow of information. To improve, ensure that you provide a balanced report that covers all data points, which will naturally allow for more complex paragraphing and cohesive structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'consistently', 'significant decline', 'notable upward trends', and 'hovering'. These choices are precise and appropriate for an academic report. There are no spelling errors, and the vocabulary used is accurate. However, because the response is very short, the range of vocabulary is limited. To reach a higher band, you should expand your writing to include more varied descriptive language and synonyms to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stagnant', while ensuring all categories are discussed.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The grammar is generally accurate, with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'The line graph illustrates how many people participated...' and '...whereas Amateur Dramatics experienced the most significant decline.' There are no major grammatical errors that impede communication. However, the limited length restricts the variety of structures you can display. To improve, aim to incorporate a wider range of complex grammatical forms, such as passive voice or comparative structures, and ensure you have enough content to demonstrate sustained grammatical control.
