Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response provides an overview of the data and identifies key trends for the activities. However, the reporting of data is inconsistent and sometimes inaccurate. For example, the description of musical performances as having a 'reading of 20' is vague, and the claim that the film club was at its 'zenith throughout the 2 decades' is not supported by the graph, which shows fluctuations. While the main features are identified, the lack of precision in reporting specific data points and the tendency to use informal language like 'fitness freak' hinder the professional tone required for an Academic Task 1 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inappropriate. Phrases like 'To begin with the Musical performances' and 'Secondly, fitness freak adults' feel disjointed. The progression of ideas within paragraphs is sometimes unclear, particularly when jumping between different activities without clear comparative language. While there is an attempt at an overview, the logical flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, which limits the overall coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and occasionally inappropriate for an academic report. The student uses informal or imprecise phrasing such as 'great hype', 'noticeable shoot up', and 'fitness freak adults'. There are also issues with word choice, such as 'chronologies of contestants' instead of 'number of participants' and 'diaries of table tennis' instead of 'data for table tennis'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of precise, academic vocabulary prevents the response from reaching a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'table tennis embark with 18 individuals' (subject-verb agreement), 'the versions of this particular stand still' (incorrect word choice/meaning), and 'the least featured is amateur dramatics' (awkward syntax). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction is often clunky. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest a lack of control over complex structures.
