The line graph compares the numbers of participants across five different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, the graph shows the film club accounted for the largest share throughout the two decades. Martial arts participants demonstrated an oscillating line graph throughout with ups and downs regularly, while amateur dramatics increased initially, followed by a steady decline till the end. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features and trends of the graph. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with data from the graph. However, there are some inaccuracies in your reporting of the data. For example, you stated that amateur dramatics reached 7 participants by 2020, but the graph shows it closer to 10. Additionally, you mentioned that table tennis reached 52 in 2020, while the graph indicates it is closer to 50. While you covered all categories, ensuring higher precision when reading the data points is essential for a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to specific activities. You used cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'As for', and 'Finally' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by grouping activities with similar trends (e.g., those that increased vs. those that declined) rather than listing them one by one. This would create a more cohesive and analytical flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'oscillating', 'steady decline', 'sudden surge', and 'all time low'. These are appropriate for describing trends in a graph. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'started increasing late than others' (should be 'later than') and 'coming to an end at 65' (should be 'ending at'). Expanding your range of synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' would further enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'Musical performances in 2005 started an all time low at 0' (should be 'started at an all-time low of 0') and 'an up again was seen' (awkward phrasing). There are also some punctuation and article errors throughout the text. To reach a higher band, focus on refining your sentence construction and ensuring subject-verb agreement.
