Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response attempts to summarise the main features of the graph, but the information is often inaccurate or confusing. For example, the claim that the film club was the highest throughout the period is not clearly supported by the data, and the description of trends for activities like 'material arts' (likely martial arts) and 'amateur dramatics' is difficult to follow due to unclear data reporting. The overview is present but lacks clarity. To improve, you must ensure that the data points cited are accurate and that the trends described (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'decreased', 'increased') are clearly linked to specific time periods and categories. The report lacks a clear, logical selection of the most significant features.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into short paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often disjointed. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover' and 'Whereas', they are often applied in a way that does not effectively link the information. The referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the different activities. For instance, the transition between the description of the film club and the other activities is abrupt. To improve, focus on using cohesive devices to create a smoother flow between sentences and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, central topic that is developed logically.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive, which restricts the ability to convey information precisely. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'participanted' instead of 'participants' and 'material arts' instead of 'martial arts'. Additionally, the use of 'at near about 8' and 'at 50' is imprecise and lacks the necessary academic tone required for a Task 1 report. To improve, focus on learning topic-specific vocabulary for describing trends, such as 'experienced a steady decline', 'reached a peak of', or 'remained relatively stable', and ensure that you use words in their correct grammatical form.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are issues with sentence structure, such as 'the number of participants in Melbourne above 60 by film club by film club in given five years', which is fragmented and repetitive. Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are also inconsistent throughout the text. While there is an attempt to use a mix of simple and complex structures, the errors are frequent and often make the meaning unclear. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and proofread carefully to eliminate repetitive words and punctuation errors.
