Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the graph, identifying trends for each activity. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial and relies on a mechanical, line-by-line description rather than a synthesis of the data. While the overview mentions the 'Film Club' and 'Table Tennis', it lacks a cohesive summary of the overall trends. The description of the data is occasionally inaccurate, such as stating 'Table Tennis' gained 5 participants by 2010 when the graph shows a different trajectory. To improve, focus on grouping trends (e.g., activities that increased vs. those that declined) and ensure the data points cited are precise to support your observations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into a single block of text, which makes it difficult to follow. There is a lack of paragraphing to separate the introduction, overview, and body details. Cohesive devices are used in a very basic and repetitive manner, such as 'The first line', 'The second line', and 'The third line'. This mechanical approach to linking ideas hinders the flow of the report. To reach a higher band, you should use a clear paragraph structure and a wider range of linking words and phrases to connect your ideas more naturally, rather than simply listing the lines one by one.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic verbs like 'depicts', 'tells', and 'gained'. There is little attempt to use academic or precise vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained constant', or 'dramatically increased'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of variety in word choice makes the writing feel simplistic. To improve, incorporate more sophisticated verbs and adverbs to describe the movement of the lines on the graph, and avoid repeating the same sentence structures throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response consists mostly of simple sentences with some errors in punctuation and article usage. There are issues with subject-verb agreement and phrasing, such as 'the most grown is Film Club' and 'the most growing is Table Tennis', which are not standard ways to describe data trends. The sentence structure is repetitive, lacking the complex grammatical forms required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using a variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses, and pay closer attention to grammatical accuracy, particularly with prepositions and verb tenses when describing past data.
