Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends and providing data points for the five activities. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, cohesive overview of the relationships between the data. While the main features are mentioned, the description of the trends is occasionally inaccurate (e.g., stating the film club remained 'stabled' when it shows fluctuations, or misinterpreting the start date for musical performances). To improve, ensure that the overview synthesizes the data rather than just listing individual trends, and double-check the accuracy of the data points extracted from the graph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes repetitive. Phrases like 'To start with' and 'In 2000' are used frequently, which makes the flow feel mechanical. There is a lack of sophisticated linking words to connect ideas or contrast trends effectively. To improve, try using a wider variety of transition signals such as 'In contrast,' 'Conversely,' or 'Meanwhile' to create a smoother progression between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'lead the highest participants' instead of 'had the highest number of participants' and 'showed the notable participants' which is grammatically unclear. The repetition of the word 'participants' throughout the text limits the lexical range. To improve, focus on using synonyms and more precise collocations related to data description, such as 'fluctuated,' 'remained constant,' or 'experienced a significant increase.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'how many people participates' (subject-verb agreement), 'is consistently decline' (tense error), and 'it participants was' (possessive/pronoun error). These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent verb tenses when describing past trends. Proofreading for small errors like 'stabled' instead of 'stable' will also help improve accuracy.
