Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of participants in five different activities at a social centre in Australia between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, the film club remained the most popular activity throughout the 20-year period, whereas amateur dramatics experienced a steady decline and became the least popular activity by 2020. In contrast, table tennis grew rapidly after 2010 and ranked as the second most popular activity at the end of the period.

In 2000, the film club attracted the largest number of participants, at approximately 65. By comparison, table tennis had only around 15 participants. Amateur dramatics and martial arts recorded about 26 and 36 participants respectively. By 2010, the figures for amateur dramatics and table tennis had fallen and risen respectively to the same level of around 19 participants.

After 2010, participation in table tennis increased sharply, reaching approximately 55 by 2020. In contrast, amateur dramatics continued to decline and fell to fewer than five participants. The number of people taking part in martial arts fluctuated throughout the period before ending at around 38 in 2020, which was similar to its figure in 2010. Meanwhile, musical performances had just over 10 participants in 2010 and increased gradually to around 19 by the end of the period.

The response effectively covers all requirements of the task. You have provided a clear overview that highlights the main trends, such as the film club's popularity and the contrasting trajectories of table tennis and amateur dramatics. Key features are selected and supported with relevant data points from the graph. The comparisons are accurate and well-integrated into the narrative. You have successfully identified the start and end points of the period and noted significant changes, such as the sharp increase in table tennis after 2010. The information is presented in a logical and professional manner, fully addressing the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from the overview to specific data points in chronological order. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Meanwhile', and 'By comparison' are used effectively to link ideas and contrast trends. The paragraphing is logical, and the information flows smoothly from one sentence to the next. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive phrasing, and the structure supports the reader's understanding of the data throughout the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic report. Phrases such as 'experienced a steady decline', 'grew rapidly', and 'fluctuated throughout the period' show a strong command of descriptive language. The word choices are precise and help to convey the trends accurately. While the vocabulary is effective and natural, it could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band, but it is certainly sufficient for a high-scoring response. There are no spelling errors, and the terminology used is consistently accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You have used a variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences, with confidence. For example, the use of subordinate clauses and participial phrases is handled well. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly to enhance clarity. There are no significant grammatical slips that impede communication. The control over tense usage, particularly when describing past trends, is consistent and accurate throughout the entire piece.
