Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a clear overview or accurately report the main features. The description of the data is often confusing and inaccurate; for example, stating that the film club participation remained the same when the graph shows a clear trend, or claiming that martial arts participation remained at an 'equal ratio' over twenty years. The reporting of percentages is frequently imprecise or incorrect based on the provided visual data. To improve, you must focus on identifying the most significant trends (e.g., the sharp rise in table tennis or the steady decline in amateur dramatics) and ensure that the data points cited are accurate and clearly linked to the specific activity.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a logical structure. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the progression of ideas is disjointed and difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, such as the repetitive use of 'after that' and 'after five years', which creates a mechanical and repetitive flow. The conclusion is also weak, as it does not effectively summarize the main trends but rather makes a vague, inaccurate statement about the data. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'in contrast', 'subsequently', 'meanwhile') and ensure each paragraph has a clear focus, such as grouping activities by their upward or downward trends.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is very limited and often repetitive. You rely heavily on basic phrases like 'started in', 'increased', and 'decreased'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'the ratio highly increased' instead of 'participation increased significantly' or 'the people participants' which is grammatically awkward. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe trends with precision. To improve, try to incorporate more specific verbs and adverbs to describe movement, such as 'fluctuated', 'plummeted', 'gradually', or 'sharply', and ensure you are using nouns and verbs in their correct forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are significant issues with sentence structure, such as missing verbs ('The line graph show that the numbers...'), incorrect prepositions, and run-on sentences. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, and the use of articles is frequently incorrect or omitted. The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences that lack complexity. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and practicing the correct use of tense when describing past trends versus current states.
