Student answer (Band 5.5)
The rendered line graph gives information about the number of participants for different activities at the social center in Melbourne, Australia, for the period of 2000 to 2020.
Overall, it can be seen that table tennis has a larger proportion throughout the era. While, in the beginning, musical performance has a smaller proportion, it grows spontaneously and becomes higher than amateur dramatics in the end.
Evidently, it is quite apparent that the film club and martial arts were stable there ranges of 60 to 70 and 30 to 40, respectively. Furthermore, amateur dramatics slowly grew in 2000 and 2005, but from 2005 it fell dramatically to nearly 0 at the end of the period. Strikingly, amateur dramatics bisects two activities in the graph.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the ability to fully develop the task. While you have identified some main features, such as the stability of the film club and the decline of amateur dramatics, the analysis is quite brief. You have missed the opportunity to provide a more detailed comparison of the data points across the 20-year period. To improve, ensure you provide a more comprehensive overview and include specific data points for all categories to better support your summary. The under-length nature of the response prevents a higher score as the task is only partially addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into three short paragraphs, which is a logical structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'While', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas feels somewhat mechanical, and the transition between sentences could be smoother. The use of 'there' instead of 'their' in the phrase 'there ranges of 60 to 70' is a cohesive error that disrupts the flow. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing is accurate to maintain a clear logical flow throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'spontaneously', and 'dramatically'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice. For example, 'grows spontaneously' is not the most natural collocation for describing a graph trend; 'increases steadily' would be more appropriate. Additionally, 'bisects' is used incorrectly in the context of describing a line graph. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher band scores. Focusing on accurate collocations for data trends will help improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity, such as the misuse of 'there' for 'their' and the awkward phrasing 'grows spontaneously'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure could be more varied. While you attempt to use complex sentences, the control over these structures is inconsistent. To reach a higher band, focus on eliminating basic grammatical errors and ensuring that your sentence construction is consistently accurate, particularly when describing trends and comparisons.
