Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers all five activities and identifies some key trends. However, there are significant inaccuracies in the data reporting. For example, you state the y-axis represents years and the x-axis represents participants, which is factually incorrect based on the graph. Furthermore, your summary of the trends is inconsistent; you mention the film club had the highest figure, but your description of the amateur dramatics trend is confusing and inaccurate. To improve, ensure you carefully interpret the axes and provide a more precise overview of the data points rather than vague descriptions like 'kept changing irregularly'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the flow is hindered by a lack of cohesive devices. Many sentences are disjointed, and the transition between ideas is abrupt. For instance, the transition 'Next we have amateur dramatics' is mechanical. The use of referencing is also weak, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of the data. To reach a higher band, use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'in contrast', 'subsequently', 'meanwhile') to connect your ideas more fluidly and improve the logical structure of your paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. You rely on basic verbs like 'started', 'increased', and 'changing'. While you attempt some more descriptive words like 'surged' and 'plummeted', their usage is sometimes contextually awkward or inaccurate given the actual data trends. There are also issues with word choice, such as 'not even 10% of people preferred it', which sounds unnatural in an academic report. Focus on using more precise reporting verbs and nouns to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'a gradual decline'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in punctuation and sentence construction. For example, there are missing commas and run-on sentences, such as 'Starting with the first activity which is the musical performance people showed no interest'. Additionally, there are errors in preposition usage and article placement. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. Focus on proofreading for basic sentence boundaries and ensuring that subjects and verbs agree.
