Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, as it is only 130 words long and ends abruptly mid-sentence. This significantly impacts the ability to fully address the task. While you have identified some main features, such as the rise in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics, the incomplete nature of the report means that the data is not fully summarised or compared. To improve, ensure you complete the analysis of all categories shown in the graph and provide a full overview that covers the entire period. The abrupt ending prevents a complete summary of the data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, and there is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'however', and 'on the contrary'. However, the progression of ideas is interrupted by the incomplete final sentence. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow is hindered by the lack of a conclusion and the unfinished state of the text. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus and that you use a wider variety of linking words to connect your comparisons more fluidly throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have used some appropriate vocabulary for describing trends, such as 'rose significantly', 'gradual rise', and 'steep fall'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor issues with word choice, such as 'between two decades' (which is slightly redundant). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms for trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'plateaued', or 'experienced a downward trend', and ensure your terminology is precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some error-free sentences, there are also grammatical inaccuracies, such as the missing article in 'illustrates number of people' and the awkward phrasing 'between two decades from 2000-2020'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the incomplete sentence at the end is a major issue. To improve, focus on article usage and ensure that you proofread your work to avoid unfinished thoughts. Developing more complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or participle phrases, would also help improve your score.
