Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the graph, including the overall trends and specific data points for the different activities. You have successfully identified the main trends, such as the surge in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, the overview could be more concise and integrated. While you mention the main features, some of the data reporting is slightly repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview clearly highlights the most significant trends without listing too many specific figures, which are better suited for the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on different time periods. The progression of ideas is clear, and you use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'however', 'on the contrary', and 'conversely' to link your points. While the paragraphing is appropriate, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary the way you introduce comparisons between the activities to make the flow feel more natural and less like a list of data points.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'steep fall', 'gradual rise', 'massive surge', and 'relatively stable'. These are appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. There are occasional minor errors in collocation, such as 'number of people in Melbourne in Australia', which could be phrased more naturally. You have used some less common items effectively, but further precision in describing the magnitude of changes would enhance the quality of your lexical choices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('illustrates number of people') and minor punctuation issues. The sentence 'Alongside martial arts as participants rose...' is a fragment and lacks a clear subject-verb connection. To achieve a higher band, focus on ensuring that all sentences are complete and grammatically sound, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures with greater accuracy.
