Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the main trends. You successfully identified the key features, such as the growth in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, the description of the musical performances is slightly unclear, as you mention 'just under a quarter' without specifying the unit of measurement (participants). Additionally, the data for the film club is slightly inaccurate in its interpretation of the graph. To improve, ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the correct units and that comparisons between categories are more precise throughout the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'By contrast' and 'Finally', to link your points. However, the use of punctuation is inconsistent, particularly with missing spaces after commas and semicolons (e.g., 'tennis;the', 'overall,it'). This makes the text feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider range of linking words and ensure that your punctuation and spacing are accurate, as these small errors can disrupt the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuations', 'substantially increased', and 'remained stable'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'started in 2005 from 0 attendance to just under a quarter'. The term 'quarter' is confusing in this context. To improve, try to use more precise collocations and ensure that your vocabulary is used in a way that is natural and contextually appropriate. Expanding your range of synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' will also help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences, there are frequent errors in punctuation and capitalization, such as 'melbourne' (should be capitalized) and missing spaces after punctuation marks. There are also minor grammatical slips, such as 'Musical performances, started in 2005'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading your work to correct basic punctuation and capitalization errors, and try to incorporate more varied sentence structures with greater accuracy.
