Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line chart illustrates the number of participants in five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, it is evident that the number of participants in table tennis and musical performances increased over the period, whereas amateur dramatics experienced a substantial decline. Although participation in the film club fluctuated slightly, it remained the most popular activity throughout the period.

In 2000, the film club attracted approximately 64 participants, making it the most popular activity. Although this figure declined gradually to around 60 in 2010, it recovered and reached approximately 66 by 2020. Participation in martial arts remained relatively stable, fluctuating between 32 and 37 participants during the twenty-year period.

By contrast, table tennis experienced the most significant growth. The number of participants increased from around 16 in 2000 to 20 in 2010 before rising sharply to just over 50 by 2020. Similarly, musical performances had no participants at the beginning of the period but grew steadily to approximately 18 participants by 2020. In contrast, amateur dramatics declined continuously from about 26 participants in 2000 to only 6 by the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and selected key features to illustrate the changes over the twenty-year period. The comparison between the activities is well-handled, particularly the contrast between the growth of table tennis and the decline of amateur dramatics. The data is accurately reported, and the inclusion of specific figures supports your observations well. To reach a higher band, you could ensure that the 'main features' are even more sharply highlighted in the overview, perhaps by explicitly grouping the activities by their growth patterns.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from the overview to specific details about the film club and martial arts, and finally to the contrasting trends of the other activities. Cohesive devices such as 'By contrast', 'Similarly', and 'Although' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows smoothly throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of cohesive devices, making the writing easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases such as 'experienced a substantial decline', 'fluctuated slightly', and 'rising sharply' demonstrate a good command of descriptive language appropriate for a task of this nature. The word choice is natural and accurate throughout the response. While the vocabulary is effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items related to data trends could further enhance the lexical range to reach the highest band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a high level of grammatical control. You have successfully used a variety of complex structures, such as subordinate clauses ('Although participation in the film club fluctuated slightly...') and comparative structures. The sentences are generally error-free, and punctuation is used correctly to manage the flow of information. The control over tense usage is consistent, accurately reflecting the past timeframe of the data. The writing is fluent, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication.
