Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph illustrates the information on the numbers of participants for five different activities such as Film club, Martial arts, Amateur Dramatics, Table tennis and Musical performance. The above figure show that the musical performances has risen subsequently from the year 2005 to 2020. Table tennis is constant from 2000 to 2010 then it has risen dramatically upward trajectory from 2010 to 2020.we check to Amateur it is same for five years it is constant not increased not decreased but in 2005 it goes downward from 2005 to 2020.However Martial arts showing slight rise slight fall..so it is sometime increasing and decreasing. Then in film club 65 participants from 2000 to 2005 it is decreased to some points later it increased to 69 participants so the highest peak is in Table tennis and the number of participants in table tennis is only 15,and lowest peak is in Amateur Dramatics since it has 25 participants.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main features of the graph, but the analysis is fragmented and lacks a clear overview. While you identify some trends, the description of the data is often inaccurate or confusing, such as the contradictory statements regarding Table Tennis and Amateur Dramatics. The report lacks a logical structure, and the lack of a clear summary of the overall trends makes it difficult for the reader to grasp the main points. To improve, ensure you group information logically (e.g., by category or trend) and provide a clear overview paragraph that highlights the most significant changes over the 20-year period.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response lacks paragraphing, which makes it difficult to follow the flow of information. Cohesive devices are used in a very mechanical and sometimes incorrect way, such as the abrupt transition 'we check to Amateur'. The progression of ideas is disjointed, and the lack of clear linking words between sentences means the reader has to work hard to understand the relationships between the data points. To improve, use clear paragraph breaks to separate your introduction, overview, and body paragraphs, and use a wider range of cohesive devices like 'in contrast', 'subsequently', or 'meanwhile' to connect your ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'increased', 'decreased', and 'constant'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'risen subsequently' (which is not the correct usage) and 'upward trajectory' used in a way that lacks precision. Some phrasing is informal or ungrammatical, such as 'the above figure show'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate a more varied range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a sharp decline', and ensure that your word choices are contextually appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the musical performances has risen'), incorrect tense usage, and run-on sentences. The sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at more complex structures are often flawed or unclear. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing capital letters and improper use of commas. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and practicing the correct use of tenses when describing past data. Proofreading for basic errors like missing articles and capitalization will also help.
