IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

 

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The illustration given displays information about the number of participants for different activities at a social centre in Melbourne over a period of 2 decades. Overall, a positive trend is seen regarding activities such as table tennis and musical performances, whereas other activities see varying alterations overtime.

Musical performances saw no participation at all for the first 5 years before it experienced its steepest increase between 2005 and 2010, shooting up to about 12 participants. Over the next few years, it saw gradually increasing numbers nearing 20 participants by 2020. Moreover, a similar positive trend is seen in regards to table tennis. Initially, about 18 participants partook in the sport with a very slight increase in the first 5 years. Eventually, the graph plateaued between 2005 and 2010, showing no changes and a constant trend, followed by a significant increase over the next decade displaying over 50 participants by 2020.

Other activities such as martial arts, amateur dramatics and film club fail to experience similiar progression overtime. Film club consistently hosts the greatest number of participants over 20 years with minute changes, as it witnessed its lowest point at 2010 before rising once again. Additionally, participation in martial arts displays great fluctuations over the years with little consistency. It sees its greatest peak in 2010 at approximately 38 participants before falling once again. Furthermore, the number of participants of amateur dramatics reaches its peak at about 30 people in 2005, before witnessing the steepest fall over the following 15 years settling at about less than 10 participants in 2020, the lowest out of all activities.
