Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response provides an overview of the data and identifies some main features. However, the analysis is inconsistent and contains inaccuracies. For instance, you state that Table tennis had the greatest number of participants in 2000, but the graph shows Film club was higher. Additionally, the description of trends is sometimes confusing, such as stating that Amateur dramatics 'suddenly dropped out' when it actually declined. While you cover all activities, the lack of precision in reporting the data points and the misinterpretation of the trends prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure you carefully verify the data points against the graph and use more precise language to describe the movements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'To begin with', and 'On the other hand' to signal transitions. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes disjointed, and the use of cohesive devices is occasionally mechanical or misused, such as 'After words' (likely meant 'Afterwards'). The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to track which activity is being discussed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, logical progression would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for higher bands. You use repetitive phrasing such as 'participants' and 'players' throughout the text. There are also errors in word choice, such as 'Table terms' instead of 'Table tennis' and 'accounted at' instead of 'accounted for'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and the errors in collocation and terminology occasionally distract the reader. To improve, try to use a wider range of synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' and ensure you use the correct terminology for the activities provided in the graph.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include incorrect verb tenses ('The line gave information'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing ('fluctuated 32 candidates period of time'). Some sentences are grammatically incomplete or confusing, such as 'Amateur dramatics was around 25 players participate'. These errors are frequent and sometimes impede the flow of the text. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that your sentences have a clear structure with a subject and a verb.
