Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the graph, including the overall trends and specific data points for the five activities. The overview is clear and identifies the main trends, such as the film club's dominance and the decline of amateur dramatics. However, the description of the martial arts trend is slightly vague, as 'remained relatively fluctuated' is not a precise description of a trend. Additionally, there are minor inaccuracies in data reporting, such as stating the film club 'slightly decreased in 2010' when the graph shows a more pronounced drop. Despite these minor issues, the main features are adequately highlighted and the response is well-structured.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group the activities effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'Looking first at', 'By contrast', and 'Meanwhile' are used to guide the reader through the data. However, there are some instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and the transition between sentences could be smoother. For example, the second paragraph starts with 'Although, other activities were...', which is grammatically awkward and disrupts the logical flow. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the progression of ideas is clear.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at using descriptive language like 'increased dramatically' and 'gradually become more popular'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'totals of taking part' instead of 'participation numbers', and 'remained relatively fluctuated', which is not a standard collocation. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. Improving the accuracy of collocations related to data description would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'it was significantly increased around 54 participants' (passive voice error), 'started almost 64 participants' (missing preposition 'at'), and 'musical performances gradually become more popular' (tense inconsistency). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the information. To improve, the student should focus on verb tenses, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that passive constructions are used accurately.
