Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends and providing specific data points. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. For example, the description of 'Musical performances' is confusing, as it states the activity started in 2005, yet the graph shows data from 2000. Additionally, the summary of 'Amateur dramatics' contains inaccuracies regarding the timeline and figures. While the main features are highlighted, the lack of precision in reporting the data and some contradictory statements prevent this from reaching a higher band. The overview is present but could be more clearly linked to the overall trends observed in the graph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the trends. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Turning to the details', 'By contrast', and 'In addition', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the abrupt start to the final paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by grammatical errors that make the progression of ideas feel slightly disjointed. Overall, the structure is sufficient to follow the writer's argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with attempts to use descriptive terms like 'fluctuated', 'dramatically rising', and 'escalated'. However, there are several spelling errors ('illustates', 'recoded', 'gradullay', 'flim', 'actitvity') and some awkward collocations, such as 'most dominated activity' and 'took a participating'. These errors are noticeable and occasionally distract the reader, though they do not prevent the main message from being understood. To improve, the student should focus on accurate spelling and more natural phrasing when describing trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there is a high frequency of grammatical errors. Issues include incorrect verb tenses ('Amateur dramatics continuous declining'), missing articles, and awkward sentence construction ('Table tennis represent dramatically rising end of the period'). Subject-verb agreement is also inconsistent throughout the text. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequent errors in basic grammar and punctuation mean that the control of language is limited. The student needs to focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring consistent verb forms.
