Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the graph, including the overall trends and the most/least popular activities. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data from the graph. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide more precise comparisons between the categories rather than just listing them individually. For instance, you could contrast the steady popularity of the film club with the dramatic decline in amateur dramatics. Additionally, ensure all data points are accurate; for example, you mentioned the film club stayed the same, but the graph shows a slight fluctuation. Overall, the response covers all requirements of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In 2000', 'In conclusion', and 'while' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is somewhat disjointed, and the transition between sentences could be smoother. To improve, try using a wider range of cohesive devices (e.g., 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', 'Consequently') to connect your sentences more fluidly. The current structure is functional, but it lacks the sophisticated flow required for higher bands. Ensure that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus to enhance the overall progression of your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'participants', 'period', and 'popular'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'lin' (line), 'untill' (until), and 'mush' (much), which slightly detract from the quality of the writing. You also rely on somewhat repetitive phrasing like 'big rise' or 'grew a lot'. To improve, incorporate more varied and precise vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'significant increase', 'plummeted', or 'remained stable'. Expanding your range of synonyms will help you achieve a more academic tone and demonstrate better control over your word choices.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'took park' (took part), 'the stayed' (then stayed), and missing articles (e.g., 'the film club'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for minor slips in prepositions and articles. Incorporating more complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or passive voice, would also help demonstrate a wider grammatical range and improve your overall accuracy.
