Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graph illustrates information about the number of participants who took part in five various activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, the film club consistently attracted the highest figure of participants throughout the age. In contrast, amateur dramatics experienced a significant decline and became the least popular activity by 2020. Table tennis showed the most remarkable growth, while musical performance gained popularity after being introduced later in the date.

In 2000, the film club had approximately 64 participants, making it the most popular activity. Although its figure fell slightly to 60 in 2020, it recovered gradually and reached around 66 participants by 2020. Martial arts fluctuated moderately over the stage, decreasing from 36 participants in 2000 to 32 in 2005, before rising to 38 in 2010 and ending at about 36 in 2020.

Table tennis experienced substantial growth. Starting with only 16 participants in 2000, the number increased steadily to 20 in 2005 and 2010, then rose sharply to 35 in 2015 and 54 by 2020, making it the second most popular activity. By comparison, amateur dramatics followed the opposite trend. After peaking at 28 participants in 2005, its total declined continuously to just 6 by the end of the stretch.

Musical performances had no participants from 2000 to 2005, but participation increased to 12 in 2010 and continued to rise gradually, reaching 18 participants in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all five activities and made relevant comparisons, such as contrasting the growth of table tennis with the decline of amateur dramatics. The data is accurately reported, and the key features are highlighted effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are precise; for instance, you mentioned the film club fell to 60 in 2020, but the graph shows it ending at approximately 66. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt comprehensively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs dedicated to specific trends. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'By comparison', and 'Although' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth, moving from general trends to specific details. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of activities. The flow is natural, and the relationship between the different activities is clearly articulated throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a data description task, using terms like 'fluctuated moderately', 'substantial growth', and 'declined continuously'. There is a good awareness of collocation and style. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'throughout the age' (which should be 'throughout the period') and 'end of the stretch' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey precise meaning and allows for some flexibility in your descriptions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a variety of complex sentence structures, such as subordinate clauses ('Although its figure fell...', 'After peaking at...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over tense and punctuation is generally strong. There are very occasional minor errors, such as 'the highest figure of participants' (which would be more natural as 'the highest number of participants'). These errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication. Your ability to combine simple and complex structures effectively contributes to a high level of grammatical control.
