Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the graph, but there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you state that amateur dramatics declined, whereas the graph shows a clear upward trend after 2010. Additionally, you mention that table tennis declined, but the graph shows it remained relatively stable or increased slightly. These factual errors undermine the accuracy of your summary. While you identify the film club as the highest participant group, the lack of precision in describing the trends for other categories prevents a higher score. To improve, ensure you carefully cross-reference your descriptions with the visual data provided to avoid misrepresenting the trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific activities. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In addition', and 'Unlike', which help the reader follow the structure. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally hindered by the factual inaccuracies mentioned in the task achievement section. The referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a report of this nature, and the information is presented in a way that is easy to follow despite the data errors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuated', 'accounted for', and 'gradual decrease'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choice errors, such as 'took a part' (should be 'took part'), 'participants off all activities' (should be 'participants in all activities'), and 'Material art' (likely 'Martial arts'). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology for describing trends and ensure that your spelling and word forms are accurate, particularly when referring to the specific activities listed in the graph.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'The participants number of amateur dramatics' (should be 'The number of participants in amateur dramatics') and 'between 2002 to 2020' (should be 'between 2002 and 2020'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor slips throughout. The errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, but they are frequent enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
