Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers all four activities mentioned in the graph and attempts to highlight trends. However, the analysis is inconsistent. While you identify some key figures, the description of the trends is often imprecise, and the report ends abruptly mid-sentence, which prevents a full overview. To improve, ensure you provide a clear 'overview' paragraph that summarizes the most significant trends (e.g., the overall growth in table tennis versus the relative stability of martial arts) rather than just listing data points. Additionally, ensure you complete your sentences and provide a concluding summary of the main features.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression is hindered by the repetitive use of 'Meanwhile' and 'In [year]' to start sentences. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as using 'Although' at the start of sentences where it does not fit the context. The abrupt ending of the text significantly impacts the overall coherence, as the final thought is left incomplete. Using a wider variety of linking words like 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', or 'Subsequently' would help improve the flow between ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. You rely heavily on basic verbs like 'increased' and 'participates'. There is also some confusion with word forms, such as 'participants of this activity' instead of 'participants in'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a sharp rise'. Additionally, ensure you use correct collocations, such as 'take part in' rather than 'takes part in' (when referring to the activity).
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The graph give us', 'no one takes part', 'a few individuals participates'). Tense usage is also inconsistent; you often mix present and past tenses when describing data from the past. While you attempt some complex structures, they are often marred by errors. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and maintaining a consistent tense—usually the past tense—when describing data from a completed period like 2000 to 2020.
