Student answer (Band 6.5)

This line graph illustrates the number of participants for different activities at a social centre in Melbourne from 2000 to 2020. Overall, it is observed that the film club has remained the most popular activity throughout the entire period with the highest number of participants. Ameteur dramatics, however, reported a continuous decline in the number of participants.

In 2000, the film club had 63 participants, which dropped to 60 in 2010, but later grew to 65 in 2020. It remained the only category with the highest number of attendees, without any dramatic surge in figures. Similarly, martial arts had 37 participants in 2000, which after some fluctuations remained the same in 2020 as well.

Amateur dramatics started with nearly 27 participants in 2007, which slightly increased to 29 in 2005, but after that year, the number of attendees continuously declined, reaching only 5 members in 2020. In contrast, table tennis had 17 participants in 2000, which slowly grew to 20 in 2005, and remained stable for the next five years. From 2010, this activity overtook the amateur dramatics club, and had a constant increase in the number of participants, before peaking at 53 total members in 2020.

However, musical performance activity started with zero members in 2005, and slowly grew to 15 participant in 2020, while overtaking the amateur dramatics in 2015.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively covers all key features of the graph. You have identified the main trends, such as the film club's consistent popularity and the decline of amateur dramatics, while providing relevant comparisons between categories. The overview is clear and sets the tone for the report. You have successfully highlighted the starting and ending points for each activity, which provides a comprehensive summary of the data. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, you mentioned amateur dramatics started in 2007, but the graph shows data from 2000. Careful attention to the provided timeline is essential for full task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary of trends. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, and you have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Similarly', and 'however' to link information effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related activities. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, although some transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. The referencing is clear, ensuring the reader can easily track which activity is being discussed.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'continuous decline', 'fluctuations', 'remained stable', and 'peaking'. This allows for flexibility and precision in your descriptions. There are occasional minor errors, such as 'Ameteur' (spelling) and '15 participant' (pluralization). While you demonstrate an awareness of style appropriate for an academic report, incorporating a few more precise collocations or less common lexical items would elevate the response further. Overall, the vocabulary is adequate and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of relative clauses ('which dropped to 60 in 2010') and contrastive structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, though there are occasional slips, such as 'Ameteur' and the singular 'participant' after the number 15. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the grammatical control is strong enough to ensure that meaning is never obscured. To reach a higher band, ensure consistent subject-verb agreement and pluralization throughout the text.
