Student answer (Band 6.5)

This line graph illustrates the number of participants for different activities at a social centre in Melbourne from 2000 to 2020. Overall, the film club has remained the most popular activity throughout the period, with the highest number of participants. Amateur dramatics, however, reported a continuous decline in the number of participants.

In 2000, the film club had 63 participants, which dropped to 60 in 2010, but later grew to 65 in 2020. It remained the only category with the highest number of attendees without any dramatic surge in figures. Similarly, martial arts had 37 participants in 2000, which, after some fluctuations, remained the same in 2020 as well.

Amateur dramatics started with nearly 27 participants in 2007, which slightly increased to 29 in 2005, but after that year, the number of attendees continuously declined, reaching only 5 members in 2020. In contrast, table tennis had 17 participants in 2000, which slowly grew to 20 in 2005, and remained stable for the next five years. From 2010, this activity overtook the amateur dramatics club and had a constant increase in participants, before peaking at 53 total members in 2020.

However, musical performance activity started with zero members in 2005, but slowly grew to 15 participants in 2020, while overtaking amateur dramatics in 2015.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the graph, including the trends for all activities. You successfully identified the most popular activity (film club) and the one with a continuous decline (amateur dramatics). The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the main trends. However, there is a minor factual error in the third paragraph: you mention amateur dramatics started in 2007, but the graph clearly shows data starting from 2000. Additionally, the comparison between activities is well-handled, particularly regarding the crossover points. To reach a higher band, ensure all data points are accurately transcribed from the graph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by activity trends. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Similarly', and 'However' are used effectively to guide the reader through the comparisons. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task. The referencing is generally clear, though the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be slightly more fluid to enhance the overall flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'dramatic surge', 'continuous decline', and 'peaking at' are used appropriately in the context of describing trends. There is some awareness of style and collocation, which allows for a natural flow. While the vocabulary is adequate, incorporating more sophisticated synonyms for 'grew' or 'remained' would elevate the response further. The word choice is generally accurate, and there are no spelling errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. You demonstrate good control over tense usage, particularly when describing past trends and current states. There are occasional minor errors, such as the phrasing 'without any dramatic surge in figures', which is slightly awkward, but these do not impede understanding. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the majority of sentences are error-free. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice or participle clauses, to describe the data trends.
