Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of participants in five different activities -- film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis, and musical performances – at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, it is evident that the number of participants for table tennis and musical performances increased significantly over the 20-year period, while amateur dramatics and film club declined considerably. Meanwhile, the number of participants for martial arts remained stable throughout the period.

In 2000, the number of participants was 65; the film club accounted for 65, followed by a small decrease to 60 in 2010 and before, gradually increasing to 65 by 2020. In contrast, the figure for martial arts remained stable and unchanged at 38 in both 2000 and 2020. Additionally, the number of participants for amateur dramatics stood at 28 in 2000, followed by a modest rise to 29 in 2005. In 2010, the number of participants gradually decreased to 20, reaching its lowest point of 3 by 2020.

Regarding the other two activities, the number of participants for table tennis started at 18 in 2000, which slightly grew to 20 in 2005. In 2010 and 2020, the figure peaked at about 52. Conversely, musical performances accounted for 0 in 2000 and 2005. From 2010 to 2020, the figure reached its highest point at approximately 20.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all five activities and made relevant comparisons, such as contrasting the growth in table tennis with the decline in amateur dramatics. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you stated the film club started at 65 and ended at 65, but the graph shows a decline from 65 to approximately 40. Additionally, the description of the film club's trend as 'gradually increasing' to 65 by 2020 contradicts the visual data. Accuracy in data interpretation is crucial for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that group the activities effectively. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Additionally', and 'Regarding the other two activities' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different trends. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between the different activities is clearly established. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between specific data points is always supported by accurate interpretation of the graph.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, using terms like 'remained stable', 'accounted for', and 'peaked'. You also use some less common items such as 'modest rise' and 'conversely'. While the vocabulary is generally precise, there are minor issues with data accuracy that affect the overall quality of the reporting. The range is adequate for the task, and you avoid repetitive phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations related to data trends, such as 'witnessed a sharp decline' or 'experienced a marginal fluctuation'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There are a few minor slips, such as the awkward phrasing 'in 2010 and before, gradually increasing', which slightly disrupts the flow. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. You demonstrate a good command of tense usage, consistently using the past tense to describe the historical data. To achieve a higher band, aim for more varied complex structures, such as using participle clauses or passive voice to describe the data trends.
