Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given line chart illustrates the count of participants for various activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the number of participants in the film club have consistently remained the highest among the other activities. The number of people who took part in table tennis increased significantly while that of amateur dramatics plummeted.
At first glance, it is abundantly clear that the number of participants in the film club have varied insignificantly and remained fairly constant somewhat between 60 and 70 from 2000 to 2020. Next, the count of individuals who partook in martial arts showed a capricious trend with the numbers being 35 in 2005, dropped to 30 in 2005, rose to 40 in 2010 and again lowered in 2015 to a little over 30, only to increase to 35 in 2020.
Moving further, the count of individuals in amateur dramatics was 25 in 2000 which steadily lowered to 5 by 2020. In addition, the number of table tennis players was 15 in 2000 which first lowered to 20 in 2010 and then uniformly increased till 2020 to reach 55. Lastly, participation in musical performances did not start before 2005. The participation gradually increased from 0 in 2005 to a little less than 20 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response effectively identifies the main trends and provides a clear overview. You successfully highlighted the film club's stability, the decline in amateur dramatics, and the growth in table tennis. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting; for instance, you mentioned table tennis 'lowered to 20 in 2010', but the graph shows a different trajectory. Additionally, the description of martial arts as 'capricious' is slightly informal for an Academic Task 1 report. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are transcribed with absolute precision and focus on objective, analytical language rather than descriptive adjectives that imply personality or mood.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by activity. The use of cohesive devices such as 'At first glance', 'Moving further', and 'Lastly' helps guide the reader through the data. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is generally clear. To improve, try to vary the cohesive devices further and ensure that the links between sentences are more fluid rather than relying on standard list-like connectors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information, using terms like 'plummeted', 'consistently', and 'uniformly'. However, there are some word choice issues; 'capricious' is not the standard term for describing statistical trends—'fluctuating' or 'volatile' would be more appropriate. Additionally, 'varied insignificantly' is slightly awkward. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate the response. Ensure that you use words that accurately reflect the nature of the data provided in the graph.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several subject-verb agreement errors, such as 'the number of participants... have consistently remained' (should be 'has') and 'the number of participants... have varied' (should be 'has'). These errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable but do not impede overall communication. You have attempted some complex structures, but the accuracy needs to be tightened. Focusing on consistent subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are punctuated correctly will help you achieve a higher band score.
