Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of participants for different activities at one social center in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.

From a broader overview, it is clear that film club remained the most common activity throughout the period, fluctuated between 2000 and 2020. Amateur dramatics decreased steadily after 2005 and became least common by the end of 2020. Table tennis participants increased gradually after 2010, showing a consistent upward trend. While musical performances were chosen by none in 2000 and 2005, increased slightly in remaining period, showing an upward trend. In addition, the number of participants in martial arts swung up and down over the same period.

In 2000, almost 65 participants were in film club. This figure slightly decreased to 60 in 2010 before recovering to around 65 in 2020. However, martial arts had approximately 36 participants in 2000, which decreased slightly to around 32 in 2005 and increased steadily to almost 37 participants in 2010. This number again decreased to around 33 in 2015, before recovering to around 36 participants at the end of 2020.

Amateur dramatics, on the other hand, accounted for approximately 27 participants in 2000, increased to around 29 in 2005. This figure declined significantly throughout the period and reached almost 5 participants in 2020. Additionally, Table tennis had around 16 participants in 2000, increased a bit to 20 participants in 2005 and remained stable in 2010. This figure rose significantly and increased to a peak of approximately 54 participants in 2020. Nevertheless, musical performances had no participants between the period of 2000 and 2005. This number increased to around 11 in 2010, almost 17 in 2015 and approximately 19 in 2020, showing a consistent upward trend.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively covers all requirements of the task. You have identified the main trends and provided relevant data points to support your descriptions. The overview is clear and highlights the key movements of the different activities. However, there are minor inaccuracies in data reporting; for instance, you mention that musical performances had 'none' in 2000 and 2005, but the graph shows a small value for 2005. Additionally, some descriptions of trends could be more precise. Overall, the response is well-structured and provides a comprehensive summary of the provided graph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by activity or trend. The use of cohesive devices such as 'In addition,' 'However,' and 'on the other hand' helps to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the analysis. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner with a clear progression throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, using terms like 'fluctuated,' 'increased gradually,' 'upward trend,' and 'declined significantly.' There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some phrasing is slightly repetitive. For example, 'increased' and 'decreased' are used frequently. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for change, such as 'surged,' 'plummeted,' or 'remained stagnant.' There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, and the vocabulary is appropriate for an academic task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some grammatical slips, such as 'musical performances were chosen by none' (which is slightly awkward) and minor issues with article usage, these do not impede communication. You show good control over tense usage, consistently using the past tense to describe the period from 2000 to 2020. To improve, aim for more complex sentence structures, such as using participle clauses (e.g., 'showing a consistent upward trend') more effectively to link ideas within a single sentence.
