Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph illustrates the number of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.
From a broader perspective, it is clear that film club remained the most popular activity throughout the period, despite some fluctuations. Table tennis experienced the highest growth among all five activities, showing a consistent upward trend. However, the number of participants of amateur dramatics decreased steadily after 2005 and became the least popular activity by the end of 2020. In contrast, the number of martial arts participants fluctuated throughout the period. In addition, musical performances had no participants between 2000 and 2005, but increased steadily thereafter.
In 2000, approximately 65 people participated in film club. This figure decreased to almost 60 in 2010 before recovering to around 66 by 2020. Martial arts class had almost 36 participants in 2000, which decreased to around 30 in 2005 and increased to almost 37 in 2010. This number again declined to around 34 in 2015 before rising to approximately 36 in 2020.
Amateur dramatics, on the other hand, had approximately 26 participants in 2000, which increased slightly to around 29 in 2005. This figure decreased steadily and fell to a low of approximately 5 participants by 2020. Additionally, table tennis had around 16 participants in 2000, which increased a bit to around 20 in 2005 and remained stable in 2010. This figure rose steadily and increase to a peak of approximately 55 participants by 2020. Nevertheless, musical performances had no participants between 2000 and 2005, but increased to around 11 in 2010, almost 15 in 2015, and approximately 20 in 2020, showing an upward trend.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and supported these with specific data points from the graph. The selection of key features, such as the consistent growth of table tennis and the decline of amateur dramatics, is accurate and well-highlighted. The comparison between activities is also handled effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with absolute precision; for instance, ensure the distinction between 'around' and 'approximately' is used consistently to maintain a formal tone throughout the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that group information by activity trends. The use of cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'On the other hand', and 'Nevertheless' is effective and helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the general trends from the specific data analysis. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between the different activities is clearly established, making the information easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'remained the most popular', 'consistent upward trend', and 'decreased steadily'. The vocabulary is appropriate for an academic report. While the range is good, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'increased' and 'decreased' to avoid repetition. For example, instead of 'increased a bit', using 'saw a marginal rise' would demonstrate a higher level of lexical control. Overall, the vocabulary is accurate and conveys the intended meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There is a minor error in the final paragraph: 'This figure rose steadily and increase to a peak', where 'increase' should be the past tense 'increased'. Despite this, the control over complex structures is consistent, and punctuation is used correctly throughout. The errors present are non-systematic and do not impede communication, which is consistent with a high level of grammatical control.
