Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph provides data on the numbers of participants at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia for various activities between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, film club predominantly has the highest number of participants from the very start of the timeframe, while table tennis significantly rose since 2010 becoming the second-largest in the activity category. Even though other two activities experienced steady growth, amateur dramatics went down sharply after a few year.

Film club dominantly started with around 65 participants in 2020; highest number in that year, and peaked at approximately 69 participants in 2020 after a slight drop in 2010. Martial arts displays a steady growth around 38 participants despite fluctuations over time. Furthermore, table tennis players rose gradually to 20 participants till 2005 and plateaued at this level in 2010 before experiencing dramatic increase, soaring to its peak at approximately 57 participants in 2020.

Another dramatic escalation is noticed for musical performances that started with record low in 2005 but experienced steady rise; a trend that continued year on year peaking at 19 participants by the end of the timeframe. However, despite starting well in 2000 with 28 participants and a subsequent increase in next five years, the amateur dramatics visibly plummeted afterwards and by 2020 the participants were less than 5.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all categories and made relevant comparisons, such as noting the rise of table tennis and the decline of amateur dramatics. However, there are significant factual errors in your data reporting. For instance, you stated the film club started with 65 participants in 2020, which is the end of the period, not the beginning. Additionally, you mentioned the film club peaked in 2020 at 69, but the graph shows the peak occurred earlier. These inaccuracies regarding the data points hinder the task achievement score, as the primary goal of Task 1 is the accurate reporting of information.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on different activity trends. You used cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'Even though' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is generally smooth, though the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be more seamless. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task. Overall, the structure supports the reader's understanding of the information presented.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the trends, using terms like 'plateaued', 'soaring', 'dramatic escalation', and 'plummeted'. These choices show an awareness of style appropriate for an academic report. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'dominantly started' and 'activity category', which sound slightly unnatural. However, these do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that the vocabulary used accurately reflects the data trends without being repetitive.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Even though other two activities experienced steady growth, amateur dramatics went down sharply'. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'other two activities' (missing 'the') and 'after a few year' (should be plural), these errors are infrequent and do not cause confusion. Your control over punctuation is generally good, and the sentence variety is sufficient for this task. Continued practice in ensuring subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy further.
