Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph provides data on the numbers of participants at a social centre for various activities in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, participants of the film club was predominantly high from the start of the period and continued to be till the final years. The other 3 categories had steady growth throughout the period despite some fluctuations in between except amateur dramatics, which rose initially but dropped sharply after 2005.
Film club activities were the most famous among other categories, dominating at around 64 in 2000 and soaring high to its peak at 69 participants in 2020, highest in any category in any year. Martial arts was the second-highest popular activity in 2000, accounting for around 38 participants whereas table tennis started off at 18 participants in the same year. However, in 2010 table tennis dramatically went up surpassing martial arts' popularity in 2015, culminating at 59 participants in 2020 taking up the second popular activity spot, while martial arts hovered around that level in 2020 after some fluctuations in between.
Moreover, participants of musical performance initiated at zero in 2005 but experienced escalation since then; a trend that continued year on year reaching its peak at around 19 participants by the end of the timeframe. Conversely, amateur dramatics activities have experienced drastic drop to less than 5 participants in the final year since 2005, after a slight increase post 2000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all categories and made relevant comparisons, such as noting the shift in popularity between table tennis and martial arts. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in your data reporting; for instance, you state the film club peaked at 69 in 2020, but the graph shows it peaking earlier. Additionally, the description of the amateur dramatics trend is slightly imprecise regarding the timeline. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are cited with absolute precision and that the overview highlights the most significant shifts more clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'however', 'moreover', and 'conversely' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is generally smooth, moving from the most popular activity to the others. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of activities. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is always natural; some sentences feel slightly mechanical in their structure. Overall, the flow of information is easy to follow and supports the reader's understanding of the graph.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'soaring high', 'culminating at', and 'experienced escalation' show a good attempt at using less common lexical items. However, there are some minor collocation errors, such as 'participants of the film club was predominantly high' (should be 'participation in' or 'number of participants') and 'most famous' (which is usually reserved for people or places, rather than activities; 'most popular' is better). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('participants... was') and awkward phrasing ('the other 3 categories had steady growth... except amateur dramatics'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your comparisons are grammatically parallel. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move into the higher band range.
