Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the ability to fully develop the response. While you have identified some main features, such as the trends for the film club and amateur dramatics, the analysis is quite superficial. You have not provided a comprehensive overview of all five activities, and the data points selected are somewhat disjointed. To improve, ensure you cover all categories presented in the graph and provide a more structured comparison of the trends over the entire 20-year period. The current length and lack of detail prevent a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'the number of'. The transition between sentences is often abrupt, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison of trends. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'in contrast', 'subsequently', 'meanwhile') to connect your ideas more fluidly. Additionally, ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, such as grouping activities with similar trends together rather than listing isolated data points.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on phrases like 'the number of people' and 'participate in'. There are also some errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'tannies' (likely intended for 'tennis') and 'flim' (film). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more precise reporting verbs and nouns, such as 'fluctuated', 'witnessed a steady decline', or 'experienced a significant surge'. Expanding your range of synonyms will help you avoid repetitive phrasing and improve the overall quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'It is surprisingly see that' (should be 'It is surprising to see that') and 'the number of participants were same' (should be 'was the same'). Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent throughout the text. While the meaning is generally clear, these errors occur frequently and distract the reader. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, particularly subject-verb agreement and the correct use of infinitives. Proofreading for small errors like missing articles or incorrect verb forms will also help increase your score.
