Student answer (Band 5.0)
The graph illustrates the information of participants for different activities at one social center at Melbourne.
Overall, I have seen that the number of participants in film club is higher than all other, and the lowest number of participants are in the musical performances. It means most of the people love to join the film club.
Furthermore, the table tennis participants graph is dramatically increases in 2010 onwards to 2020, means the participants increase the interest in table tennis after 2010.
On the other hand, the musical performances also increases from 2005 to 2020.
Now lets talk about the martial arts, the graph of martial arts participants looks flat, a little ups and down can be seen in the graph but mostly it went stable, means the Martial arts is one of the stable and consistent in these all.
Lastly, the Amateur dramatics participants loose interest because the graph of Amateur dramatics can be seen dropping from 2005 to 2020 and then it almost end like nothing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response provides a basic overview and attempts to describe the trends for each activity. However, it fails to meet the requirements for a high-scoring Task 1 response. The analysis is overly simplistic and relies on subjective commentary (e.g., 'most of the people love to join') rather than objective reporting of data. Crucially, the response lacks specific data points or comparative figures, which are essential for a Task 1 summary. While the main features are identified, the lack of precision and the failure to synthesize the information effectively limit the score. To improve, you must include specific numbers or years from the graph to support your observations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inappropriate. Phrases like 'Now lets talk about' are too informal for an Academic Task 1 report. The progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed, as the transition between the overview and the specific trends is abrupt. While there is an attempt to use linking words such as 'Furthermore' and 'On the other hand', the overall flow is hindered by repetitive sentence structures and a lack of sophisticated referencing to the data provided.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic verbs like 'increases' or 'looks' to describe trends. There are also errors in word choice, such as 'the participants increase the interest' instead of 'interest among participants increased,' and 'loose interest' (should be 'lose'). The language is generally informal and lacks the precision required for academic reporting. To achieve a higher band, you should incorporate a wider range of vocabulary related to trends, such as 'fluctuated,' 'declined steadily,' 'remained stable,' or 'reached a peak.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the musical performances also increases'), incorrect tense usage, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'the graph of Amateur dramatics can be seen dropping'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and apostrophes. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic sentence construction prevents the response from reaching a higher band score.
