Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all key features of the graph, including the trends for all five activities. You successfully identified the most popular activity (Film club) and the most significant changes (Table tennis and Amateur dramatics). However, the report lacks a clear, cohesive structure. While you have selected the main features, the presentation is somewhat fragmented due to the use of bullet points and inconsistent paragraphing. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data is integrated into a formal essay format with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information logically rather than listing each activity separately.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The use of bullet points is inappropriate for an IELTS Academic Task 1 response, which should be written in formal paragraphs. While there is a logical progression of ideas, the cohesion is mechanical. Transitions between sentences are often missing or awkward, such as in the paragraph about Musical performances where the sentence structure is run-on. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall paragraphing is not used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Improving the use of linking words and removing the bulleted list format will significantly enhance the flow and coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuated', 'sharp rise', and 'remained stable'. However, there are several errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'became popular in participants' and 'over taken the Amatuer dramtics'. Additionally, there are spelling errors like 'Amatuer' and 'dramtics'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure you proofread for spelling accuracy. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher band scores.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The line graph illustrate', 'Film club were the top choice') and punctuation errors (e.g., the misuse of commas and the use of '&' instead of 'and'). Some sentences are poorly constructed, such as 'it immediately reached the number of people to 10'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to lower the score. Focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and avoiding run-on sentences.
