Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph elicits the participation numbers for the various activities at one social center in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.
The social center welcomed numerous participants in various activities, which include, Film club, Martial arts, Amateur dramatics, Table tennis and Musical performances, from 2000 to 2020.
Of all the activities, Film club stayed at the maximum number of participants, at 62-65 participants, while also staying almost steady throughout the time period. Martial arts also stayed within a range with some fluctuations. On the other hand, numbers of Amateur dramatics drastically fell after 2005, from about 28 to just 5 members in 2020. Musical performances began gaining participants in 2005, the same year when amateur dramatics started to decline, and grew to a modest number of 15 members. Interestingly, Table tennis saw a rapid growth in its members after 2010, from just below 20 members to more than 50 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the graph, including the trends for each activity. You have successfully identified the stability of the Film club, the decline of Amateur dramatics, and the growth of Table tennis. However, the overview is somewhat weak; it is integrated into the second sentence rather than being a distinct paragraph that highlights the most significant trends. To reach a higher band, ensure the overview provides a clear summary of the main movements (e.g., the contrast between the declining and growing activities) rather than just listing the activities. The data points are generally accurate, though the report could benefit from more precise comparisons between the activities at specific time intervals.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear progression from an introduction to the body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the other hand' and 'Interestingly'. However, the paragraphing is underdeveloped; the response is essentially one large block of text. Splitting the information into distinct paragraphs—one for the overview and one or two for the detailed trends—would improve the structure significantly. Additionally, some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical. Improving the flow between sentences by using a wider variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuations', 'drastically', and 'modest'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is positive. However, some word choices are slightly repetitive or imprecise, such as 'stayed at the maximum number' or 'stayed within a range'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to data description, such as 'remained stable', 'experienced a sharp decline', or 'showed a significant upward trend'. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points clearly, but it lacks the sophistication required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and easy to follow, and there are no major errors that impede communication. You have used some complex structures, such as 'the same year when amateur dramatics started to decline'. However, there are minor grammatical slips, such as 'The line graph elicits the participation numbers', where 'illustrates' or 'shows' would be more appropriate. Additionally, punctuation could be refined, particularly regarding the use of commas in lists. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher score.
