Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph depicts about the various members at single social centre for several tasks- film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis, musical performances- in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.

Firstly, the table tennis had the number of participant was nearly 15 and it remains static upto 2010 and it climbed up rapidly and reach at the second highest position in 2020. Similarly, musical performances remain constant till 2005 from the beginning. However, it increase slightly and it comes nearly to the position of table tennis.

Secondly, the film club and martial arts demonstrates the same oscillatory trends. In 2000, film club was at the top and still it was on the top due to its constant nature. Furthermore, martial arts had also done the same acts, it also remain static.

Ultimately, the table tennis elucidates the upward trend, nevertheless, amateur dramatics shows the downward trend and one tremendous thing is that film club and martial arts remains same till the end of this period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response provides a summary of the main features, but it lacks a clear overview. The description of trends is often inaccurate or confusing, such as stating that the film club and martial arts remained 'static' when the graph shows fluctuations. The comparison between activities is also underdeveloped. To improve, you should identify the most significant trends (e.g., the overall growth of table tennis versus the decline of amateur dramatics) and ensure that your data points are accurately reflected. The report lacks a clear summary statement that highlights the key differences or similarities across the period, which is essential for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. While transition words like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Ultimately' are used, they do not always connect ideas logically. For example, the transition to the final paragraph is abrupt and does not effectively synthesise the information. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between different activities. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical rather than natural, and the paragraphing does not fully support the development of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'remains static', 'same acts', and 'tremendous thing' are either imprecise or used incorrectly in this context. There is an attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary, but the range is insufficient to convey the information with precision. Errors in word choice, such as 'depicts about' and 'elucidates the upward trend' (which is used in a slightly unnatural way), occasionally impede the clarity of the report. Expanding your range of synonyms for trends and data description would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the table tennis had the number of participant was'), incorrect tense usage, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'it comes nearly to the position of'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and hyphens. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar structures prevents the response from reaching a higher band score. Focus on mastering basic sentence construction and subject-verb agreement.
