Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph depicts the preference of participation in various activities by people at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia over a period of 20 years, from 2000 to 2020.
In 2000, Film club had around 65 participants, making it the most popular activity that year. Despite witnessing a fall to 60 members in 2010, it remained the most preferred activity throughout the period, with a final figure of over 65 participants in 2020. Martial arts was found to be the second most popular activity with over 45 participants in 2000. After experiencing slight fluctuations in 2005 and 2015, it had the same number of participants in 2020, which is 45.
Moreover, Table tennis gained popularity after 2010, when it had only 20 participants, which dramatically rose to 55 by the year 2020. Amateur dramatics also had 20 participants in 2010, unlike table tennis, the trend decreased substantially to reach the final figure of less than 10 participants in 2020. No participation in Musical performances was observed till 2005. After that, a rise in participation was seen with the highest of 15 members in 2020.
Overall, Film club remained as the most participated activity throughout the period, while table tennis and musical performances gained popularity overtime. In comparison, no major changes in participation was observed for Martial arts. However, table tennis represented as the only activity with a decreasing number of participants overtime.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features and trends of the graph. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data from the chart. However, there is a significant factual error in your conclusion: you stated that 'table tennis represented as the only activity with a decreasing number of participants', which contradicts your earlier correct observation that amateur dramatics also decreased. Additionally, ensure that your summary accurately reflects all data points; for instance, the claim that table tennis was the only decreasing activity is a major oversight that affects the accuracy of your reporting.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In comparison', and 'Despite', which help the flow of information. Paragraphing is used effectively to group related activities. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between ideas is smoother and that the referencing is precise. For example, the phrase 'unlike table tennis, the trend decreased' is slightly awkward; a more cohesive structure would be 'in contrast to table tennis, the number of participants in amateur dramatics declined'.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'witnessing a fall', 'dramatically rose', and 'slight fluctuations' show an ability to describe trends effectively. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'most participated activity' (should be 'most popular activity') and 'gained popularity overtime' (should be 'over time'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching the higher bands where more sophisticated and precise lexical control is required.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'no major changes in participation was observed' (should be 'were observed' to agree with 'changes') and 'represented as the only activity' (should be 'was the only activity'). These errors are non-systematic and do not cause confusion, but they indicate that you are not yet consistently using complex structures with full accuracy.
