Student answer (Band 7.5)

The graph illustrates data on the number of participants in particular activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, it is clear that the activities varied considerably in terms of their trends, with some experiencing an increase in participation while others saw a decline. Furthermore, the film club accounted for the highest number of participants, whereas musical performances and table tennis experienced a considerable upward trend throughout the period. By contrast, amateur dramatics saw a downward trend over the period.

Looking first at the activities that experienced an upward trend, table tennis recorded a significant increase, reaching over 50 participants by 2020, despite it starting with a low number of participants, at just under 20 participants, in 2000. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all key features of the graph, including the overall trends and specific data points for each category. You have successfully identified the main trends, such as the upward trajectory of table tennis and the decline of amateur dramatics. The comparison between categories is clear, and the overview provides a good summary of the data. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with maximum precision; for instance, the term 'remained unchanged' for the film club is slightly inaccurate as the graph shows clear fluctuations and an overall upward movement over the 20-year period. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group the information by trend (upward vs. others). Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Looking first at', 'Similarly', and 'By contrast' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the data. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the referencing is generally clear. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is always natural; for example, the phrase 'despite this, it saw a slight increase' is slightly repetitive in structure. Overall, the text is easy to follow and well-structured.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'considerable upward trend', 'significant increase', and 'fluctuations'. The language is generally precise and appropriate for an academic report. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To move towards a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to describe the data, such as 'a steady climb' or 'a marked decline'. The current vocabulary is adequate and functional, demonstrating a good level of control over the topic-specific terminology required for this task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used complex sentences effectively, such as 'despite it starting with a low number of participants... in 2000'. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally accurate. There are a few minor issues, such as the comma usage in 'standing at approximately 68 members, by 2020', where the comma is unnecessary. However, these minor slips do not interfere with the clarity of the message. The grammatical control is consistent throughout the response, showing a solid grasp of tense usage and sentence construction.
