Student answer (Band 7.5)
The line graph illustrates trends in participation numbers across five activities offered at a social centre in Melbourne between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, film club consistently attracted the most participants throughout the period, while table tennis saw the most dramatic change, overtaking several other activities to become the second most popular by 2020. Musical performances, meanwhile, did not exist as an activity until partway through the period.
Film club remained the clear leader throughout, fluctuating only slightly between 60 and 66 participants. Martial arts followed a similarly stable pattern, hovering in the low-to-mid 30s, aside from a brief peak of 38 in 2010.
By contrast, table tennis rose steadily from just 16 participants in 2000 to 54 in 2020, with growth accelerating sharply after 2010. Amateur dramatics moved in the opposite direction, declining from 26 to a mere 6 over the same period, having briefly risen to 28 in 2005. Musical performances were not recorded until 2010, after which numbers climbed steadily to reach 18 by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response is excellent. You have successfully identified all key trends and provided a clear overview that captures the main features of the graph. You effectively highlighted the stability of the film club, the significant growth of table tennis, and the decline of amateur dramatics. The inclusion of specific data points to support your observations demonstrates a strong ability to select and report relevant information. The comparison between activities is well-integrated, and the chronological progression is logical. You have fully addressed all parts of the task, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, a concise overview, and two body paragraphs that group information effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use cohesive devices such as 'meanwhile', 'by contrast', and 'after which' to link sentences and clauses naturally. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the stable trends from the more dynamic ones. The flow of information is easy to follow, and the use of referencing is precise, ensuring that the reader is never confused about which activity is being discussed.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using precise terms such as 'fluctuating', 'dramatic change', 'accelerating sharply', and 'stable pattern'. The language is natural and appropriate for an academic report. There are no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation, and you successfully avoid repetition by using varied verbs and adverbs to describe the trends. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, incorporating a few more sophisticated, less common lexical items could elevate the response even further to a band 9 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your control over grammar is very strong. You utilize a variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses, without making any significant errors. Punctuation is accurate, and the tense usage is consistent and correct throughout the report. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the few structures used are handled with high precision. The writing is fluent and professional, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence that supports clear communication of the data.
