Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph below illustrates the data about how many people engaged in various activities at a social centre in the city of Melbourne from 2000 to 2020.

Over the period, the amount of participants were generally steady in Film club and martial arts. However, the amateur dramatics, table tennis as well as musical performances, have had bit of over fluctuations over the years, showing that people's interest about these activities keeps changing overtime.

In 2000, Film club started with 64 participants approximately, which started decreasing a little in 2010 to around 60 people, after which it reached nearly to 63 participants in 2020. Similarly, Martial art club started with 38 participants approximately in 2000, which had a little spike of 40 participants in 2010, but came down to 37 participants in 2020.

Moving on to the, Amateur dramatics club, in 2000 started from around 28 people engaging in it, but then started dropping from 2005, and kept declining till 2020, left with nearly 1 participant. Moreover, Table tennis looked like one of the attractive activities, as it started with around 15 participant but started skyrocketing to upto nearly 50 participants in 2020. Lastly, Musical performances started late from the year 2005 from 0 participants in the first year and showed another magnetic activity for citizens of Australia to attend as it kept increasing slowly upto 11 participants.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the graph, including the trends for all five activities. You have successfully identified the main trends, such as the decline in amateur dramatics and the growth in table tennis. However, the overview is slightly weak; while you mention that interest 'keeps changing', it would be more effective to highlight the most significant contrast, such as the stark difference between the declining amateur dramatics and the rising popularity of table tennis. The data points are generally accurate, though the description of the film club as 'steady' is slightly inaccurate given the fluctuations mentioned later. Overall, you have provided a clear summary of the information.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the data. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'Moving on to', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'Moving on to the, Amateur dramatics club' contains unnecessary punctuation that disrupts the flow. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between the overview and the body paragraphs could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuations', 'skyrocketing', and 'declining'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, 'amount of participants' should be 'number of participants' as participants are countable. Phrases like 'bit of over fluctuations' and 'magnetic activity' are slightly unnatural in an academic context. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, you need to focus on more precise collocations and avoid informal phrasing to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the amount of participants were' (subject-verb agreement) and 'started from around 28 people engaging in it' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors, such as the unnecessary comma in 'Moving on to the, Amateur dramatics club'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
