IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line chart illustrates the numerical data of the participants for various activities at a social centre situated in Melbourne, Australia.
Overall, the key feature of the data was that the members of the film club always remained at the highest number despite being relatively constant throughout the 20 years while the other activities remained low in numbers. Moreover, table tennis showed the dramatic ascend and dramatics the opposite while Musical performances started to occur after the year 2005.
Foremost, the most popular activity which remained between 60 to 70 numbers throughout these 20 years is club for cinema. Moreover, while the martial arts showed the participants between number 30 to 40 also had identical change like the film club as it also did not show much fluctuation. The unique perspective was shown by Musical performance as it started to appear on the chart after the year 2005 and had a increment of roughly less than number 20 overall from the year 2005 to 2020.
Secondly, the amateur dramatics members went from almost 25 to less than number 10 showing dramatic decrease throughout 2000 to 2020. Additionally, even though the tennis remained steady from 2000 to 2010 (number 10 t0 20) it experienced highest ascend of more than 30 numbers after the year 2010.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all categories (film club, martial arts, musical performances, amateur dramatics, and table tennis) and made relevant comparisons. However, there are some inaccuracies in your reporting; for example, you describe table tennis as having a 'dramatic ascend' and then 'dramatics the opposite', which is confusing and not supported by the data. Additionally, referring to the film club as 'club for cinema' is slightly repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that your descriptions of trends are precise and that you avoid contradictory statements when summarizing the data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific trends. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Foremost', and 'Secondly' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the phrase 'had identical change like the film club'. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that pronouns or comparative phrases clearly refer back to the intended subjects would enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the main features of the graph, such as 'fluctuation', 'increment', and 'steady'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'numerical data of the participants', 'dramatic ascend', and 'had a increment'. These errors occasionally hinder the precision of your report. To improve, focus on using collocations correctly (e.g., 'a significant increase' rather than 'a increment') and avoid repeating the same descriptors. Expanding your range of reporting verbs and nouns will help you achieve a more professional tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'the members of the film club always remained at the highest number' (should be 'highest number of participants'), 'dramatics the opposite', and 'number 10 t0 20'. There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
